New Music

For some reason I've become super lazy and apathetic about finding new music lately. I guess I never got on websites like pitchfork, and I don't know other blogs or sites. So I just didn't really get a lot of new music unless I stumbled on it.

But right now I'm downloading a bunch of new music. Getting new Four Tet, New Pornographers, Ariel Pink, Gil Scott-Heron, seeing as how he died. I dunno. Music is so interesting and I should listen to more of it. I should be more explorative. I should just get more things. I play music at work.

The other thing is that my ipod doesn't play music anymore. The headphone jack broke. So I can't do that. But yeah. I guess I don't need to play music on the bus or anything like that.

Right now I'm listening to the latest No Age album. I liked their old stuff. Never bothered to hear the new stuff. Glad I'm listening.

I'm also downloading a movie called 'Of Gods And Men'. Mr. Mightremindyou has told me about it in the past, and my aunt has talked about it too. I think I'll watch it tonight for fun.

R&B And Ideological Inconsistency

When I first began this blog I remember telling myself that perhaps sometimes I would review albums on this blog. Write about music that I like. But as it turns out, I have written almost exclusively about personal issues and philosophical issues. Sure, different types of personal and philosophical issues. But my writing doesn't always branch out THAT much. I briefly attempted to write something like poetry, and attempted to write a few things like short stories or vignettes, but that never much worked out.

But tonight as I was cooking myself dinner I had some thoughts about music. I was listening to The-Dream and so naturally I was thinking about R&B music a little bit.

I'll come right out and say it: I love R&B. I also really like some more rap stuff.

I love The-Dream, R. Kelly, Young Jeezy, Kanye West. I like Drake, Lil Wayne, and Lil B. I kinda like Rick Ross. I like what I have heard of Tyler, The Creator (Sorry I haven't listened more Rob).

It is a lot of fun. I enjoy the beats. I enjoy the vocal style. It is just a different type of music and I can't help but like it.

I remember in November 2009 I was standing at my College Park house on Erie Street and The-Dream's 'Mr. Yeah' was playing. I stopped and I said, 'what is this? this is really good'. I didn't even have to make an effort to like The-Dream. I liked it the first time I ever heard it.

Then I started to understand dancing. I didn't understand dancing for the longest time. I didn't want to do it. I just 'didn't know how'. I suppose I still don't 'understand' it. But that is the point. It isn't about words. It is just about moving because the music feels good. And man did R&B help me understand that. You just have to move. You just have to enjoy yourself and express yourself. I suppose in the last few years I've become more and more open to all different kinds of expression, and so dancing is a good one to be comfortable with.

In short, I can't help but feel really good about dancing to R&B and the way it makes me feel.

There is one major problem, however. The lyrical content is typically morally reprehensible. Rap and R&B are loaded with terrible sexism, money-worship, violence, et cetera. But what to do? How am I to deal with this fact? I like this music a great deal, yet completely disagree with its explicit content and message.

A big issue. I guess I can call this an ideological inconsistency. I am using the word ideological in a very imprecise way. It wouldn't be appropriate to call it an intellectual inconsistency because the problem goes deeper than the intellect. My love of R&B isn't governed by some intellectual apprehension of it. It is guided by my emotional response to it, by the sounds and the singing. But when I register it on an intellectual level I can't help but feel troubled. The real tension is between my emotions and my intellect(ual emotions). when I refer to 'the ideological' element of this I am thinking of ideology as something that encompasses both my intellect and my emotions. My emotional and intuitive reactions are conditioned by ideology just as much as my intellectual reactions are. So there is some kind of inconsistency between the 'ideology' that is structuring my emotional reactions and my intellectual reactions. Or maybe my emotions aren't guided by ideology as much as I'm supposing they are. Because I definitely think of my emotions as being structured by social and ideological factors. I'm thinking about status functions and the way I respond emotionally to them.

Eh. I feel like there are deeper problems to think about here. I need to think about this notion of ideology and how it applies to status functions. I need to think about this idea of inconsistency in my own mind.

I know that when I started this writing I had questions about inconsistency, how I could contain these types of inconsistencies within me. Ummm. I'm not sure. What are the levels at which these inconsistencies exist? How can I talk about them? Think about them? Eh.

My Taste in Music, Playing it in front of others, changing opinions, explained by simulation theory of mind

Sometimes when I like a cd I want to play it in front of someone else.

Sometimes when that person doesn't like the music, though, I find my taste for the music waning.

I think I am very strongly inclined to simulate the thoughts of people around me.

Simulation theory of mind has helped me get a grip on this in a lot of ways.

But I would say it is an interesting case when I am playing someone music I like, but then I see that they don't like it (facial expressions, words, etc.) and my mind imagine a mind that dislikes it and then I don't like it quite as much.

In Goldman's Simulating Minds he quotes Hume, I think, when he said that when the novelty of a story of poem has worn on us, we can show it to a friend. By having our friend experience the novelty of it for the first time we too can enter his mind and reexperience the piece as fresh, as original. We see the novelty of the work from our friends eyes, and get closer to the novelty we felt.

This is the other way around I suppose. We like a song, we want to play it for someone to reexperience the novelty of it, but then they don't like it. For me, and again I think I am simulatively/empathetically inclined, and when someone didn't like a song I could feel myself liking it less. Very interesting stuff.

I like using simulation theory of mind to facilitate my reflections on my own memories, or in my daily observations of people. It seems to explain a lot, actually.

I was thinking of how as a a kid I really like the cd by the band Cake, and how I played it for my dad and could see he didn't like it, then I felt myself liking it less. This has happened with my dad a couple times. We have different taste in music, so when I play him something I like that he doesn't, which happens often, then I feel my mind bending to be like his mind. I feel myself drifting towards simulation. I experience what it is like for him not to like the music I like. This happens less these days. But when I was younger I was less comfortable differing in opinions with my dad.

But yeah, simulation theory of mind is fascinating and I think can shed light on a lot of stuff.

My last post, 'Narrative as an Investigatory Tool," is much more interesting than this post. But I had this one in mind about a month ago and wanted to do it quick.

It is only a brief break. And jeez I love The National

I haven't posted in a while. I am busy, as my last blog noted. After Wednesday I will have time and I plan on writing a number of blogs.

My reading is pretty much off the charts these days. Just in terms of making some interesting new connections between some things. In particular I just read a book on neuroplasticity, buddhist philosophy, and quantum mechanics that makes a very compelling statement about the ability of the will and the imagination to rewire neural circuits. The implications for a lot of the things I think about are very large. Tons of justification and support for lots of things.

Then I am reading a book called Reality Hunger and I am about to start Simulating Minds. So things are good.

Also, the new The National cd, High Violet, leaked this morning and I have been listening a ton. It is really good. I had given up on The National in a way. I had low expectations because I had burnt myself out on all their music soooo much. I wasn't expecting them to excite me.

But man this cd is killer so far. I am very excited. Really really digging on it. Nice that they still got it for me.

Many posts to come.
